What does a Funeral Director do?

The Funeral Director's job is to keep in control all the activities that take place in the funeral home, as well as to have the corresponding permits from the state up to date.

​

Is the spokesperson for the funeral home, so must stay updated with changes in laws and is responsible for signing all documents. Additionally, assists the family so that the event is carried out according to the protocol and their beliefs.

What is the purpose of embalming?

The purpose of embalming is to preserve the body and make it as presentable as possible for service or to remain in good condition during a ship-out to another destination, if applicable.

Cases where embalming is not required, because a direct cremation or immediate burial will be carried out.

Is embalming required by authority?

This process is not required by law, however, embalming is recommended in case there is going to be a visitation or ship-out service, this will ensure that the remains are better presented.

The family is the only one who has the decision to authorize the process.

Question

What procedures are required after a death?

Answer

 

In the event of a death, the family must bring the following documents to the funeral home:

  • Birth certificate of the deceased person

  • Photo ID

  • Basic personal data, where they lived, where they worked, how many years they lived in this country (if them were foreigner), their marital status, where the remains will be left, etc.

The basic data of the deceased person is taken for the purpose of making the death certificate and the corresponding permits.

With these documents, the body can be buried or cremated locally. If you wish to transfer them to your country of origin, then consular procedures in the destination country are required.

What documentation should I have ready when the funeral home staff arrives?

When the person dies and the funeral home is called, you should have on hand:

- Copy of birth certificate

- Photo ID

- Marriage certificate if they are legally married.

- Date and time they died

- Social Security (if they have it)

- Parents name

- Place where they will be buried

- Contract number (if you have a pre-funeral arrangement)

What should I do if my family member dies at home?

Answer

If it was natural death and the deceased was in the care of a nurse, they must be notified so that they can declare the death. In case of not having this service, you must called 911 to send paramedics or police officers that can attest to the legality of what happened. If it is not natural death, “the body cannot be moved for any reason.”

Once death has been declared, you can call the funeral home to take care of your loved one and proceed to perform the funeral service.

What happens if my family member dies in a hospital?

The hospital social worker can support you with the procedure and guide you about the funeral homes where you can request the service.

Once the funeral home has been chosen, you must go to sign the legal forms and the staff will be in charge of carrying out taking the deceased, while the hospital will be in charge of obtaining the signature of the responsible doctor for the death certificate.

What happens if a family member dies abroad?

If you wish to bring the body to the American Union, you must look for a funeral home in the country where the death occurred. How long does a funeral service last?

The services vary depending on the funeral home, at Funeraria Latino Americana our services last 4 to 5 hours starting at 9:00 am, with everything prepared, so that the family can say goodbye to their loved one.

What is a ship-out or repatriation?

It consists of the transfer of human remains to their country of origin with the corresponding preparation and procedures for shipment, whether by air or land, as the case may be.

How long does the cremation process take?

It is considered an approximate 15 days, from the moment they signed, until the funeral home has the ashes, to deliver them to the relatives.

Who delivers the death certificate?

The health department is the one who registers and authorizes, while the funeral home where the funeral services are performed is responsible for delivering the death certificate(s).

What can I do with my loved one's ashes?

There are different options:

Leave them at home, somewhere special
Scatter them in the sea
Bury in cemetery or in a church.
Dividing ashes among family members is also legal
Whatever the family chooses, they must have the respective permits for the disposal of the ashes.
